We're Hiring!
Round Barn Fiber Mill in Durand, IL, has been blessed with great customers, outstanding employees, and an incredible amount of work. We’ve adopted a “how can I make this better” approach to just about everything we do to give our customers the best possible product and service. But investing in infrastructure and more machinery doesn't help one bit without good people to operate the machines.
Round Barn Fiber Mill is seeking an additional person, just the right person, to join our team. Our mill currently has a new opening for a machine operator. Duties include setting up and operating the machines we use here at the mill--primarily spinning frames, plyers, and pin-drafters. Secondary duties may include contributing to other mill operations as needed--washing, picking, carding, and/or skein winding. Previous experience working with animal fiber is highly desired (see below). But previous experience working in a mill is not required, as we do things differently than other mills and expect to train the right person.
The right person will:
This position is paid hourly. Pay starts as $12.00 per hour, is part-time, and increases with experience. We’re still too small to offer health insurance and 401ks. But we do offer lots of kitty love from Isaac the fiber mill cat, and we have a flock of really friendly Jacob sheep to hang out with!
If you think you might be the right person to join our team, please send us an email at [email protected], and tell us why. If you know someone who you think might be that perfect person, please share this message with them. Please don't call--like I said, we're really busy. A resume would be great, too!
We look forward to hearing from you!

The right person will:
- Have a love and appreciation for fiber and fiber arts.
- Have some experience working with animal fiber. This doesn't need to be experience working in a fiber mill. It could be knitting, crocheting, weaving, felting, handspinning, processing fleece at home, etc. Some experience raising fiber animals (sheep, alpacas, llamas, fiber goats, etc.) is a plus, too!
- Be able to work in a production environment (we make a lot of yarn here!).
- Be able to balance creativity with production (again, we make a lot of cool yarn here!).
- Be detail-oriented.
- Not be afraid of a little dirt.
- Not be too proud to ask for some help.
- Respect other people's strengths, weaknesses, and beliefs.
- Be reasonably comfortable with computers and all their little irritations.
- Have a bit of mechanical aptitude (not absolutely required, but a plus!)
- Be at least 18 years old.
